Reference Question of the Week

This blog shares common questions and answers handled by an academic law librarian. The blog is intended to aid our students and to collaborate with the law librarian community. What is the Reference Question of the Week?

JoanShear | 27 November, 2005 14:58

At the Boston College Law Library we use the triage reference model where library support staff at our single service point do all they can for a patron, including referring those questions they can't answer to professional reference librarians or technology specialists. To keep up the skills and service levels provided by all members of the team, a service model like this requires both extensive initial training in legal research and reference, and ongoing training in the handling of both routine and complex reference questions.

For almost five years our weekly law library staff newsletter has contained a column called Reference Question of the Week which was designed as part of our ongoing training for our library staff. Some of the questions illustrate important issues involving library polices, some highlight often over-looked library resources, but the majority are just interesting questions with interesting answers.

We thought other members of the law library community might enjoy seeing some of these questions and answers, and might also want to share their approaches to solving these legal research challenges. Thus, this blog.

Hope you have many, many more interesting reference questions. Both the students and librarians will benefit from your experience.

As a library student who intends to become a law librarian, I've been struggling to find a way to learn more about legal reference, and you've done a lot to fill that need with this blog. Thank you!!!!

This is an attempt to prevent that annoying spam that clogs up this Blog. Hopefully without it we can get some real discussions going on some of these questions. Thank you to all who have really posted.

I am pleased to see that my alma mater, BCLS, has such a conscientious and tech-savy staff in the law library.

I wish CALR had been available when I was there 1974-1977.

Best Wishes and Thanks for a very useful blawg.
